Meet Rick Zollinger, MD, FACS

Dr. Rick Zollinger is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience spanning general surgery, cardiovascular care, thoracic procedures, and wound care. Known for his humor, insight, and passion for teaching, Rick brings wisdom and authenticity to his role as a physician coach. His wide-ranging career in both private practice and hospital systems informs his deep understanding of the challenges physicians face today.

Hi, I'm Doc Z!

Medicine was a family tradition. My uncle co-discovered Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, and my father was a surgeon. Growing up, I thought surgery was just what you did; I even sat in the OR as a child during procedures.

Though I took a few detours in college, I eventually found my way to medical school and into surgery. I loved obstetrics, considered cardiology, and nearly pursued pediatric cardiac surgery. Instead, I built a rewarding career in cardiothoracic surgery, eventually founding my own group in Charlotte and teaching as a clinical professor at UNC.

After a short-lived retirement, I returned to help launch a hospital’s wound care and hyperbaric medicine center. The collaboration across specialties energized me; it reminded me why I loved medicine in the first place.

As a coach, I help physicians reconnect with their purpose and navigate transitions with confidence, perspective, and a touch of humor along the way.
